Newly designed hair line must have two superior features.  First, it should be natural looking. Second, it should be individualized and customized according to the patient. Why are these aspects are so important? Because the frontal hairline, more than any area of our scalp, defines the end result of our hair restoration surgery. The hairline will be observed daily by the individual and rest of the world. The result of the hairline restoration re-frames a person’s facial and over all appearance and look. Natural appearing hairline with proper density will be responsible for optimum aesthetic results of any hair transplant procedure. To achieve fuller, thicker and youthful hair transplant outcome, it is significant to know that a scientific and artistic approach is required to design a very realistic looking hairline. This valuable aspect indicates that our European certified consultant Plastic Surgeon must make exact slits with proper angles for each and every graft to ensure the placement of hairs and this will allow the hair to grow in the right direction. Hair line restoration is a signature of your surgeon and you will wear it your whole life.

What is Hairline?

The area at the top of our forehead from where our hair on our head starts growing or the region where the forehead merges with the scalp hair is called the “Hairline”.  Because of the popularity of modern hair restoration and new development in quality of the techniques, today many individuals are looking for hair transplant surgeries for their receded hairlines. It is absolutely possible to create a natural hairline through hair transplant surgery. However, they should understand that it is genetically normal that the position of hairline recedes as get grow older.

The Art and Science of Hairline Design:

Hairline is the most visible part of the head and a good hairline gives you a more youthful appearance. Therefore, newly created hairline should be natural looking, be aesthetically placed on right location and be appropriate to an individual’s facial features and age. Well experienced, artistic and skillful hands is the key to design a natural hairline. The experienced and skilled European certified consultant Plastic Surgeon knows how this designed hairline will age as the person ages and the patient will be able to appreciate a natural look. The results then will meet their facial features, sex, age, ethnic character and the shape of your head.

Understanding the above concept our European certified consultant Plastic Surgeon can design a very natural hair line with proper density for every individual. In order to achieve the ideal outcome of hairline restoration, the shape and design on the top of forehead is important as well. Every person has a uniquely shaped forehead that requires careful and studied considerations. Here are some important characteristics that should be considered by a hair restoration surgeon when designing a hairline.

  1. Age
  2. Forehead shape and facial features
  3. Recipient hair loss area
  4. Old hairline before receding
  5. Donor area flexibility and density
  6. Individual’s expectations and needs

Aesthetics of Hairline and Grafts Placement:

Patient’s age, degree of hair loss, location and shape of hairline, progression of hair loss, family history, graft type and density are very important factors to address when lowering or reshaping your hairline. The height of the hairline can be determined in several ways. The central hairline can be placed 6.5 to 8 centimeters above the brow, we can use four fingers above the top of the eyebrows to determine our hairline. The fundamental esthetics in our forehead constitutes half the distance between the eyebrows and the chin. However, there is no definite figure. A person’s age, gender, ethnicity and needs are more important. To achieve most natural look and thickness, frontal full area should be divided into two zones. The anterior or transition zone should be irregular and soft. The posterior or defined zone should be thicker and defined.

The Transition Zone:

The frontal area (approximately 0.5 to 1.5 cm of the hairline) is the transition zone. If the patient has greater degree of hair loss then the transition zone can be wider. This zone should not be a straight line rather it should be shaped in accordance to the patient’s facial features or the shape of your head. This zone contains elongated triangles of single hairs with low density (10 to 18 hairs/ sq.cm).

The Defined Zone:

The portion behind the transition zone is called the defined zone. The defined zone is around 2 to 3 cm in area. The defined zone requires high density and high defined hairline for natural results. In this zone, single follicles are placed with higher density (15 to 35 hairs /sq.cm). Implantation of single, double and triple follicle units can accomplish both goals of our density as well as a natural looking hairline.

The Technique:

Hairline designing or lowering procedure starts with the administration of local anesthesia in the donor region and the harvesting of hair follicles from the safe zone. The hairline restoration is a 3 steps procedure.

1: Donor Harvesting:

The grafts are harvested form a safe zone from the back of head. There are two common ways of removing follicles, Strip harvesting and follicular unit harvesting. Careful harvesting of the donor hair yields the best hair transplant results.

2: Creating the Recipient Sites:

Perfect angle and direction, perfect pattern and perfect graft-to-site fit are the keys to make your hair transplantation results as natural as possible. The slits should be created with a proper angle and depth to assure a blood supply to the inserted follicles. The projected position of angles will be responsible for right direction of inserted grafts to grow naturally. Frontal hairline angle variation is 20 to 35 degrees in different regions. Ending of the defined zone may require between 30 to 40 degrees of angle variation. However, temple angles change 10 to 15 degrees.

3: Grafts Insertion:

This is a final step of hair restoration process that requires an aesthetically trained eye and a surgically skilled hand. Placement of grafts following the directions of created sites under the supervision of our European certified consultant Plastic Surgeon provides a natural look. Single follicular units are placed in the frontal hairline known as the “transition zone” and double follicles are placed behind the frontal hairline for slightly more density in the “defined zone” while units of three follicles are placed at the top and back to provide maximum density.

What are the risks involved in hairline restoration procedure?

The common risks of hairline restoration are swelling for few days and bad hairline brings unnatural appearance and unpleasant shape. However, if it is done properly by an expert, people cannot notice that you had a hair transplant surgery; on the contrary, if the hair transplant is easily detectable it means the surgery was not done by a skilled doctor. The basic goal of hairline restoration is to provide the patient with a natural appearance with reasonable density that will express a person’s unique individuality.
